Nelson Tonegates enlisted in Salt Lake City, Utah on 02 April 1943. He was a member of the Ute tribe.Was killed by shrapnel in his neck.
He was awarded the Silver Star Medal a first time for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in connection with military operations against the enemy on 28 August 1944. He was awarded the Silver Star Medal posthumously a second time for previous actions on 6 June 1944.
