Pvt Robert J. Berthot enlisted in Buffalo, New York on 27 July 1944.

He was a graduate of the Niagara Falls high school and was employed at Gassler's bakery before his enlistment. Pvt Berthot received his basic training at Fort McClellan, Ala., and left for overseas service in January, 1945. He saw service in Belgium, France and Germany.

Pvt Berthot received the Silver Star for stopping a tank and killing the escorting infantry.
