Sgt Elmer L. Hess took part in the invasion on D-Day at Omaha Beach on 6 June 1944.

He was reported wounded in action on 2 August 1944 and, after hospitalization in England, returned to duty on 4 October 1944.

On 3 December 1944, Sgt Elmer Hess was wounded in action for the second time from a shell fragment at Luchem, Hürtgen Forest, Germany. He was evacuated tot the 96th Evacuation Hospital. He died a few days later.
