"Pfc Joseph Franklin Legg, 26, son of Mrs. Orpha Legg, route 4, was killed in action in Belgium on Jan. 15, according to word received this afternoon from the war department. Pfc Legg was born August 7, 1913, and resided southeast of Tipton. He had been employed on the farm of Hilton Hobbs before entering service. He was inducted April 6, 1944.""Mrs. Orpha Legg, route 4 Tipton, recently received a letter from Captain Frank J. Kolb Jr., commanding officer of the 16th Infanty division, concerning her son Pfc Joseph F. Legg, who was killed in action on Jan. 15, 1945, in Belgium. The letter in part follows: 'Joseph was buried in belgium with a Protestant chaplain officiating at the burial services. Joseph at all times, was a good soldier and was well liked by both officers and men. He continually displayed the habits and bearing of a soldier and gentleman, and had the real respect and friendship of all who knew him. He died as he lived, courageously; in the performance of a difficult mission.' Pfc Legg was killed less than nine months after he entered the service. He was last home in August 1944, and went overseas the first of September."
"Pfc Joseph Franklin Legg is one of more than 23 Tipton county men killed in service. He died Jan. 15 in Belgium and his death was reported here Feb. 5. Pfc. Legg was inducted April 5 1944, at Indianapolis and he was assigned to Camp Robinson, Ark., for basic training. He was home on furlough August 17 and left August 29 for Fort George G. Meade, Md., before reporting for overseas duty on September 7. After the death of his father in July 1939, Pfc Legg remained on the farm. he was 26 years old at the time of his death. He belonged to the Hobbs Christian church. Pfc Legg was a brother of Mrs. Lee A. Henderson and an uncle of Evelyn Lee Henderson. He was a nephew of G.C. Legg, east of Hobbs."
