Pfc Harvey M. Whiteside Jr. graduated from East Lampeter High School in 1940 and was employed at the Armstrong Cork Company.

He enlisted in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on 17 November 1942 and sent overseas in April 1943.

He was wounded during the invasion of Sicily and spent six months in a hospital in North Africa. He rejoined his company in England and took part in the D-Day invasion of France.

Pfc Whiteside was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Solers, France.
