Pvt James R. Flynn was employed as a chauffeur with a contracting company in Cincinnati before he enlisted in Cincinnati, Ohio on 6 November 1942. He was sent overseas in April 1943, serving in North Africa, Sicily and the invasion of France. He had been hospitalized twice and returned to duty.

His brother Thomas T. Flynn was killed in action on 9 July 1944 and is buried next to him.
