More information

T/Sgt Calvin L. Ellis attended high school for two years and worked in the aircraft industry.

He joined the Regular Army at Fort Wadsworth, Rosebank, New York on 2 February 1941.
He participated in the campaigns in North Africa and Sicily before his unit landed at omaha Beach on 6 June 1944.

He was awarded the Silver Star three times for gallantry in action. The first time for actions against the enemy in the vicinity of Matour, Tunisia, on 28 April 1943. When besieging enemy forces threatened his
battalion's security, T/Sgt (then Staff Sergeant) Ellis, disregarding intense artillery, mortar, and machine-gun fire, boldly led his platoon into an extremely exposed position and covered the battalion's flank. His fearlessness, gallantry, and unhesitating action enabled his unit to launch a successful attack.

He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with E Company against enemy forces on 6 June 1944, in France.
