More information
Pvt Curtis L. Jones graduated from Troy High School and was employed by the Diamond Rock Creamery Company before he enlisted at Fort Dix, New Jersey on 7 April 1944.At the time Pvt Jones was reported missing in action, his regiment was engaged in an assault against enemy positions on the high ground north of Heistern, Germany. In making the assault, his unit crossed open terrain under the direct observation of the enemy. Heavy supporting fire from the enemy artillery and mortars fell among the attacking men. Pvt Jones was last seen crossing this open terrain, however after the attack, he was not present.
After the hostilities, graves registration units conducted many searches in the area which resulted in the recovery of many remains of American servicemen, but Pvt Jones wasn't one of them. At that time, he was therefore determined to be nonrecoverable.
In July 1961 however, German workmen discovered the remains of an American soldier during the expansion of a quarry at Langerwehe, Germany which could be identified as being of Pvt Jones.
He was given his final resting place at the Meadowlawn Cemetery in Petersburg, Rensselaer County, New York on 1 June 1961.
Pvt Jones is commemorated at the Tablets of the Missing at Luxembourg Cemetery. A rosette was placed next to the name.
After the war, the Sullivan-Jones Veterans of Foreign War (V.F.W.) Post was co-named in his honor.
