Pfc William J. Zientara enlisted in Rochester, New York on 26 May 1942.

He went overseas about Christmas 1943 and was in England before the invasion of France began. On 26 July he was hit by enemy fire. He wrote his family that had pain in his arm and leg. Headquarter announcements on the day he was wounded said the entire American front was expanding with United States tanks making their first big drive with doughboys riding then into battle.
