Pfc John E. Slaven attended Fresno High School and graduated from the Washington Union High School at Easton (California), where he was a member of the football and track team. He worked on the family dairy farm before enlisting.PFC Slaven joined the U.S. Army Reserve in San Francisco, California on 7 August 1942. He attended army radio school, but transferred to the air corps in the summer of 1943. He was then transferred to the infantry in December 1944. He went overseas in February 1945.
