Pvt Joseph J. Kirdzik enlisted in Hartford, Connecticut on 3 July 1941.

He attended Naugatuck High School and prior to entrance into the Army was an employe of the Naugatuck Chemical. He received basic training at Fort Devens, Mass. and had been overseas since December 1943. He was a member of the 28th Division of the 3rd Army under General Patton and was in the invasion of Normandy on D Day. His brother S/Sgt Zygmund Kirdzik had also been overseas with the American forces.


Pvt Kirdzik was reported missing twice before, having returned to his outfit after being reported missing on 29 August 1944. He turned up on the 26th of September. On the 9th of December a telegram was received by his family that he was missing again in action in Germany.
