Pfc James E. Harter attended East High School and worked as a taxi driver.

He enlisted at Camp Dodge, Iowa on 5 June 1944 and was sent overseas in November 1944.

Pfc Harter was reported wounded in action in early January 1945 that required hospitalization in the Netherlands and returned to active duty by the end of the month.

He did not have a chance to learn about the birth of his fourth child.

His older brother Wallace A Harter (born on 17 April 1918) enlisted on the very same day at the same enlistment post. He survived the war and died in 1985.
