S/Sgt Edwards was an amateur boxer and athlete.

He was sent overseas on 20 November 1943 and in February 1944 he was chosen by his commanding officer to spend 60 days in the British Isles to observe their way of fighting and living.

S/Sgt Edwards was lightly wounded in action on 26 August 1944.
