Sgt Calvin V. Erdly aided to build the Indiantown Gap Military Reservation in 1941. After that work was completed he started working in a silk mill in Sunbury.
He enlisted in New Cumberland, Pennsylvania on 29 October 1941. He received his basic training at Camp Croft, South Carolina. Here he won an award for left handed marksmanship. In February 1942 he was transferred to Fort Custer in Michigan and in April to Iceland. He landed in July 1944 in France where he was wounded in October.

His brothers William and Carl also served during the war.
