Pvt William H. Rhodes graduated from Pendleton High School and attended Oregon State College. He was employed at the Hotel Pendleton and later by the Union Pacific railroad before he enlisted in Portland, Oregon on 25 January 1944. He was sent overseas in August 1944.

On 28 December 1944, relatives received a letter, dated 10 December, in which Pvt Rhodes said that he was in a hospital somewhere in the European theater, following a fracture of the left leg above the knee. He said he was receiving excellent care and was doing well.
