Pvt Duane Newman baseball and basketball in high school. He continued to play Legion baseball after high school, from which he graduated at the age of sixteen. He continued his education by attending Estherville Junior College and graduated in May 1944. He was active in dramatics at college and had one of the leading roles in the junior college play. To make ends meet while at college he stayed at the Gardston Hotel in Estherville and worked as a bell boy. Like many young men he had a sweetheart, Colleen Reynolds from Estherville Iowa. They were engaged to be married.He joined the U.S. Army Reserve on 1 June 1944 at Camp Dodge Herrold, Iowa. He was sent overseas on 12 December 1944.
