Pfc Austin J. Hersh graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1942 and attended Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania.He joined the U.S. Army Reserve in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania on 7 December 1942. He was selected for the Army Specialized Training Program (A.S.T.P.). As a result, he attended classes at Washington & Jefferson College until ASTP was disbanded.
He was named after his uncle, Austin Herman Hersh, who was killed in action in France during WWI. He is buried at Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery.
