Henry Smits graduated from De Pere High School in 1943 and worked for the Broadway Garage.

He enlisted in the spring of 1944 and trained at Camp Hood, Texas and Fort Meade, Maryland.

Pvt Henry J. Smits had been at the front once, he had told his parents in a letter, and it was believed he met his death in his second action.

His grandfather was born in Lottum, the Netherlands. Together with his brother he immigrated to the United States. There is still family living in the Netherlands.
