More information
Pfc Roger T. Van Tuyl worked from early 1940 until April 1944 building bombers for Lockheed Aircraft in Missouri, but requested a change in his draft status and reported for the draft on 6 July 1944. He received his training at Fort Hood, Texas and in November 1944, he was transferred to Fort Meade, Maryland for deployment to the European Theater of Operations, ETO.He arrived in Europe in December 1944 and was transferred to the 84th Infantry Division as a replacement but the date is not known except that it was after the beginning of the Battle of the Bulge. He was assigned to his company as a rifleman. He was a member of his company for such a short period of time that he most likely knew very few of the others of B Company.
Pfc Van Tuyl was killed by shrapnel from either a mortar or an artillery shell. There is no record of the circumstances of his death.
Since 24 August 1993 there is a memorial marker at the Mount Grove Cemetery in Independence, Jaskson County, Missouri. He is also remembered at the Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon.
