Pfc William J. McGinley enlisted in Cleveland, Ohio on 10 December 1942.From a letter sent to his wife of 9 May 1945 from the Headquarters of the 84th Infantry Division, Office of the Commanding General:
"On May 3, 1945, your husband and another soldier were inspecting several pistols which had been taken from prisoners when one of the weapons was accidently discharged, wounding William in the right side of the chest. He was given immediate first aid and was being taken to an American Militairy Medical Installation for further treatment when the wound resulted in his death."
