Pfc Garry D. Mercer attended high school for four years and was a smith.

He enlisted in Richmond, Virginia on 24 July 1944.

Reports indicate that he was part of a group of twelve men of C Company who were in an assault boat which was crossing the Roer River. The craft was sujected to enemy machine gun fire, which caused it to sink.
