Pvt William F. Montgomery graduated from Hollidaysburg High School in 1943 and was engaged in the Future Farmer Work Program, in which he did outstanding work. For that reason he began farming himself. He specialized in the growing of potatoes and was given the achievement award from the federal government for his outstanding contribution in the field of agriculture.He enlisted in New Cumberland, Pennsylvania on 5 April 1944 and arrived in Europe on 15 September 1944.
