2nd Lt Mercer A. Yeager graduated from Whitman College, Oregon and was employed in the mail order department of Montomery Ward & Co. before he enlisted in Portland, Ohio on 10 July 1942. He was sent overseas in September 1944 and joined his unit on 1 November 1944.
