Pfc William R. Hannye enlisted in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania on 24 June 1942.

Pfc Hannye, one of four brothers in the armed forces, was killed in combat in Germany while serving with an infantry unit. He entered military service while a student at the University of Pennsylvania and had been overseas four months. He was a graduate of GAR High School and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He worded at various times at the Washington Diner, which was operated by his brother.
