Cpl Roderick W. Hetzel attended college for one year and was employed at the Connecticut Motor Club Travel Counselor before he enlisted in New Haven, Connecticut on 22 March 1943.

He died in a hospital to the effects of artillery shell fragments in his chest and femur.
