Pfc William H. Calkins attended Middlebury College in Vermont for two years.

He joined the U.S. Army Reserve at Fort Ethan Allen, Vermont on 19 August 1942.

He studied under the A.S.T.P. at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, Nebraska and was assigned to the infantry when the program was discontinued. He was sent overseas in September 1944.
