Pfc James D. Phebus attended Bowers high school for four years and was employed at the Fairfield Manufacturing Company before he enlisted in Indianapolis, Indiana on 9 February 1943. He was sent overseas in September 1944.

He was killed artillery shell fragments in his chest.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Hochfelden, France.

He is remembered at the Maple Lawn Cemetery in Thorntown, Boone County, Indiana.
