Pfc Rupert E. Barnett Jr. graduated from West End High School attended Georgia School of Technology for one year before he joined the U.S. Army Reserve in Atlanta, Georgia on 9 December 1942. He was sent overseas in September 1944.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Hochfelden, France.

His brother Hugh T. Barnett is buried at Sicily-Rome American Cemetery.
