Pfc Rupert E. Barnett Jr. graduated from West End High School attended Georgia School of Technology for one year before he joined the U.S. Army Reserve in Atlanta, Georgia on 9 December 1942. He was sent overseas in September 1944.He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Hochfelden, France.
His brother Hugh T. Barnett is buried at Sicily-Rome American Cemetery.
