Pfc John B. Mason graduated from Ottawa Hills High School and attended Yale University for one year. He withdrew from college and enlisted on 30 June 1943.

He was assigned to the Army Specialized Training Program (A.S.T.P.) and studied at State University of Iowa from February-April 1944. Upon the discontinuance of program he was transferred to Camp Phillips and assigned to the infantry. He was sent overseas in September 1944.

He was killed artillery shell fragments while serving as a scout when his unit was assigned the mission of securing a railroad crossing south of Meirhauf, France.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Hochfelden, France.

He is remembered at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio.
