More information

Sgt Percy Kampen first worked on a farm until a year before he went into service when he worked at an air plant in San Diego, California.

He enlisted on 16 March 1943 and trained at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, Nashville, Tennessee and Camp Atterbury, Indiana. He was sent overseas in October 1944.

He was taken prisoner of war in the vicinity of Sankt Vith, Belgium on 21 December 1944.

He was first held prisoner at Stalag IV-B in Mühlberg and later at Stalag VIII-A near Görlitz, Germany. As of 14 February 1945 the prisoners were marched out of the camp westward in advance of the Soviet offensive into Germany. The evacuation took place on foot. Their destination was Stalag VII-A in Moosberg an der Isar or Stalag IX-C near Bad Sulza.

The exact circumstances and location of his death is not known to us at this moment.

He is memorialized at North Beaver Creek Lutheran Cemetery in Ettrick, Wisconsin.

His brother Norman served with the Navy in the Pacific and his brother Emmett served with the Army Air Corps in France.
