Pfc Ralph H. Leavitt attended Lyons Township High School.

He joined the U.S. Army Reserve at Fort Sheridan, Illinois on 15 December 1943.

He was taken prisoner in the vicinity of Sankt Vith, Belgium on 21 December 1944 and was first held prisoner in Stalag IX-B in Bad Orb, Germany.

In February 1945 more than 350 U.S. POW's, Jewish and other religions, were sent to Berga concentration camp for forced labor. On 4 April 1945 these POW's were send on a death march to Bavaria. On 15 April they were in the vicinity of Marktredwitz, Bavaria, Germany.
