James Manning was a 1942 graduated from The Citadel, where he majored in history. His activities at college included freshman football, Pee Dee Citadel Club and Varsity Boxing Team.

Although Capt Manning's official date of death is 21 December 1944, records prove he was killed on the first day of the Battle of the Bulge on 16 December 1944. That day, Capt Manning was leading his men against a German attack on Bleialf.

Cpt James L. Manning was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery of Foy, Belgium.
