More information

1st Lt James C. Jr. joined the U.S. Army Reserve in Urbana, Illinois on 14 September 1942 while attending the University of Illinois. He was called into active service in June, 1943. He graduated from Officer Training School on 25 May 1944 at Fort Benning and was sent overseas in October, 1944.

He was taken prisoner.

He died in Stalag XII-A during a British night air raid. The intented target was the railway station in Diez, but some flares, dropped by the pathfinder aircraft, drifted off course in a strong wind and strayed into the POW camp. The bombs of RAF Mosquitos did not miss the highlighted target of a concrete building, housing mostly medical personnel.
