More information

Pfc Hillary W. Machado was a truck driver.

He enlisted at the Presido of Monterey, California.

He was taken prisoner on 16 December 1944. According to the Prisoners of War Data File, his status is noted as “Executed, Died in Ship's Sinking or Result of Ship Sinking, Shot While Attempting Escape” and the camp where he was held prisoner as Dulag 377 in Gerolstein, Germany. This is a general indication that was used for a large range of different circumstances in which a prisoner was killed or died.

On 24 December 1944, the marshalling yards of Gerolstein were bombed by the USAAF. During this attack, also the hospital was hit, killing a lot of wounded. Therefore it is possible that Pfc Machado was a victim of this attack. More information about the exact circumstances are not available at this time.
