T/Sgt Steve G. Barna enlisted in the Regular Army in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on 24 March 1941. He had been overseas since February 15, 1942 and served in Iceland, England and Northern Ireland before going into battle near St. Lo in France in July. Since that time, according to letters written home, he had been continually in the combat area. He was attached to the Fifth infantry division of Patton's Third Army.
He was wounded in action while taking part in the Battle for Luxembourg December 27, while leading his mortar squad, and died of his wounds on January 4.

He attended William Horlick High School and was employed by the J. I. Case Company when he entered the service. His father was an immigrant from Hungary. His daughter Susan Irene was 28 months old at the time of his death, and he had never seen her.
