S/Sgt Raymond L. Avery enlisted in the Regular army in Nacagdoches, Texas on 5 April 1940.

He attended post graduate studies and worked as a lumberman before he enlisted. He was first buried at the U.S. Temporary Cemetery of Limey near Toul, France.
