More information
Pfc Robert J. Collins enlisted in the Regular Army at Fort Thomas Newport, Kentucky on 20 October 1941. He received his training at Camp Wolters in Texas and left for overseas duty February 18, 1942. He served 17 months in Iceland and was later stationed in England and Northern Iceland. He was sent to France July 7.He worked on a farm before he enlisted.
Pfc Collins received what appeared to be a relatively minor wound. A bullet had grazed the side of his head, deep enough to reach his skull bone, without doing any damage to his skull. It looked like a million–dollar wound. His wound was dressed and someone headed off to find a medic. Before the medic arrived, he got into a shock and died.
He was first buried at the U.S Temporary Cemetery of Champigneul near Châlons Sur Marne, France and is remembered also at the Beech Grove Cemetery in Muncie, Delaware County, Indiana.
