S/Sgt Charles E. Paxton graduated from Liberty Memorial High School in 1938 and attended the University of Kansas. He was employed as a librarian.

He joined in the National Guard on 23 December 1940.

S/Sgt Paxton was reported wounded in action on 16 February 1945 in Luxembourg and returned to duty four days later.
