Pvt Hawkins enlisted in October, 1939 at Fort Sheridan, Illinois.In a letter to his mother written on 14 February 1945, he expressed the feeling that under the circumstances at the moment he never knew what the next day might hold in store, but added that he was looking forward to coming home.
