Pfc John A. Handel graduated from Roger Bacon High School and was employed by the C. Schmidt Co.He enlisted in Cincinnati, Ohio on 24 October 1942 and was sent overseas in December 1943.
On 9 July 1944, Pfc Handel was wounded in action in France and recovered in a hospital in England. For this he was awarded the Purple Heart Medal a first time.
The Bronze Star Medal was awarded posthumously for heroic achievement. The citation cited: "When a man was wounded in a mine field, Pvt Handel was mortally wounded by the explosion of another mine when trying to save him."
