Pfc Russell A. Smith enlisted in Indianapolis, Indiana on 9 November 1943. He was a painter before he enlisted.

He was reported missing in action during an enemy attack in the Hürtgen Forest, Germany. His remains were found in 1947 in a fox hole. He was identified by his ID Tag. He was killed by artillery.

He is remembered at the Galveston Cemetery in Galveston, Cass County, Indiana.
