More information

Pfc Carl Stern immigrated from Germany on 6 January 1938.

He enlisted at Fort Ja, New York on 6 August 1942.

He was awarded the Purple Heart Medal as first time for wounds, sustained in action. He sent that medal to his aunt Emma, because he didn't want to worrie his mother.

He was killed in action during a reconnaissance patrol with his campany commander. As the jeep, in which they were riding, came around a bend in the road, two german soldiers were noticed running into the woods, which was on the far side of an open field. The jeep stopped, and Pfc Stern began running across the field toward where the enemy soldiers had entered the woods. As he reached about the middle of the field, a shot rang out from the woods and he fell. More shots were fired at the Captain and the driver, who had to take shelter. Medical aid was immediately obtained, but the aim of the German sniper had been too good.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery of Ittenbach, Germany.
