Richard Brown graduated from Altoona High School and attended Clemson College, South Carolina. He was employed as a clerk in an A&P Store.

He enlisted on 19 February 1943 and was sent to Clemson College to take a nine months course in engineering under the Army Specialized Training Program. When the program was abolished, he was reassigned to the infantry.
