Pfc Burleigh A. Smith attended college for one year before he joined the Regular Army in Fort Devens, Massachusetts on 12 November 1943.He volunteered to lead a rescue party over exposed terrain, which was under artillery fire, to rescue a wounded companion. His party reached the wounded man, but while loading him on to the stretcher, Sgt Smith was mortally wounded. For this action he was rewarded the Silver Star Medal posthumously.
He is remembered at the Evergreen Cemetery in Leominster, Worcester County, Massachusetts.
