Pfc John E. Miller enlisted at Fort Snelling Minnesota on 8 February 1944.The Albert Lea youth died on March 26, 1945, while a prisoner of the German government. He had been reported missing in action on January 3, 1945, in Belgium after being overseas since October, 1944. His parents received a card from him containing John's signature and the news he was a prisoner.
Pfc Miller was inducted into the army at Fort Snelling, Minnesota on March 15, 1944 and received his basic training as a "walkie-talkie" radio messenger at Camp Roberts, California. From there he was transferred to Fort Meade, Maryland, and then to Fort Jackson, S.C. for additional training as a flame thrower. Leaving for overseas duty in October, he was first stationed in England, going from there to France December 4. Just before going overseas he was made a company bugler and litter bearer.
Pfc Miller attended the Albert Lea high school and was a member of the First Methodist church.
