More information

Pfc Nicholas Zulick attended high school for 1 year and was an employee of Coaldale colliery of Lehigh Navigation Coal Co. and was well know as an athlete. He was also one of 12 trustees at St. Nicholas Greek Catholic church.

He was killed by mistake near a prisoner of war camp. He was shot by an American guard when he was mistaken for an escaping German prisoner.

Statement of Lt. Roland P. Lemker, in a letter to his widow:
"Pfc Zulick and another soldier were walking at the edge of a wood in the rear of a prisoner camp near Strassburg. The guard, who was one thousand yards away, thought them to be escaping prisoners of war. In the guard's attempt to apprehend the 'escapees' Private Zulick received gunshot wounds in his chest which caused his death 10 minutes later. It was accidental, and being late in the afternoon, it was impossible for the guard to distinguish whether Pfc Zulick was an American or a German soldier."
