More information

S/Sgt Harrison A. Rowe was a clerk when he joined the National Guard in Bluefield, West Virginia on 17 January 1941.

He was awarded the Silver Star Medal. The citation stated: S/Sgt Harrison A. Rowe led a patrol forward to reconnoiter a route for his division through the Siegfried Line. After locating a suitable route, Sgt Rowe and his men encountered intense machine gun and rifle fire which prevented their withdrawal. With no cover available and moonlight and flares revealing their position, S/Sgt Rowe fearlessly arose, crossed 400 yards of open fire-swept terrain and started firing at the enemy. By diverting the hostile fire from his comrades to himself, he enabled his patrol to withdraw and return safely to friendly lines with the vital information obtained.
