Pfc John W. Downs attended college for one year before he enlisted at Fort Custer, Michigan, on 21 April 1943 and was sent overseas on 16 October 1944.

He was reported seriously wounded from artillery shell fragments on 7 January 1945 in Tillet, Belgium. He died in a Portable Surgical, during evacuation, or in a T/O Convalescent Hospital.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Grand Failly, France.
