Donald A. Kilpatrick attended law school in Texas before he joined the National Guard. He was selected for Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia. After obtaining his commission, he was retained there as an instructor, receiving rapid promotion to the rank of Captain.He was mortally wounded near Dinant, Belgium on 7 September and died in a hospital in France on 8 September.
He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery of Fosse, Belgium.
