S/Sgt Gordon E. Hennen enlisted at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri on 6 November 1942.

He had been overseas for twenty-three months, having been in North Africa, Sicily, England, France, Belgium and Germany. He landed in France on D-Day and was wounded, being awarded the Purple Heart. He also received a citation medal for his division, the 9th, having less men wounded and gaining more territory than any other division.
